Review Insanity and P90X For Weight Loss

You have seen the infomercials, magazine ads and web banners touting one product over another as a way to lose weight, build muscle and get in shape. But, if you are like me and many thousands (if not millions) of other people, you are still feeling frustrated and looking for the real answer to the question: “How can I lose weight?”.

P90X vs Insanity Product Comparison

Check the table below to find answers to the most common questions regarding Beachbody’s best workouts:

45 MINS.

75 MINS.

insanity workoutINSANITY Against P90X: The Insanity Workout and P90X Compared

Thousands if not millions of people have been using P90X for the past few years in order to lose weight and get in fantastic shape. But while this fitness program is great for getting in fantastic shape and losing a lot of weight, it has a downside: it is a 90 days commitment, in which a person really has to stick to following the program to a T in order to achieve the great results they’ve seen on TV.

For those people who are not willing, ready or that simply can’t afford to commit to a 90 day workout program, then Insanity is a fantastic alternative.

You see, P90X is considered the pinnacle of resistance training and now Insanity has become the pinnacle of cardio training. Insanity was created by a guy that goes by the name of Shaun T. This guy drew from his collegiate experience as a track and field super star as well as many years as an elite trainer to create the most demanding cardio workout ever put on DVD.

I know this sounds like a bunch of marketing BS, but let me tell you something: it is not! This program works very well, but it will make you sweat like never before. These routines are tough and will help you burn up to 1000 calories per workout. In other words, these are not your typical cardio sessions on an elliptical machine in the “fat burning zone”.

These workouts will push you to your limits but you will notice how your clothes fit more loosely and how you have more energy and stamina right from the start. You can expect to see loose fitting clothes and pounds dropping in the first couple of weeks. Yes! It works that fast. But it comes at a price. That price is that it is really tough to do. At least for an overweight man like myself it was. But, do not let that discourage you. You see, the fitter you get, the harder you can push yourself.  That doesn’t mean that the workouts get easy. It just means that you can keep pushing against your previous best efforts, and continue to improve.

In a way, the genius behind workouts like P90X or Insanity is that you never out grow them. You can always keep adding reps, or going strong for longer periods of time. If you ask me, that’s a far smarter investment in yourself than paying for gym memberships. I for one, hate going to the gym. If you do enjoy it, then more power to you!

insanity workout When you order Insanity, you will receive:

  • 10 DVD’s
  • Fitness guide
  • Elite nutrition guide with tips and recipes to help you feed your body to replenish after the grueling workouts. But relax, this isn’t a diet or anything like that. You will be eating more than you think! But not of overly processed foods, but wholesome natural ingredients like veggies, lean proteins, and nuts and seeds.

Listen, if you are serious about burning calories, eating healthy and losing weight, the you should consider Shaun T’s Insanity. This workout is a 60 day program based on HIIT training or High Intensity Interval Training. And what it does is have you exercise at a very high pace for a short period of time, followed by a short rest.

Insanity workouts work like this:

  1. You do a series of moves without rest
  2. Repeat that series of moves a little bit faster
  3. Repeat those same moves a third time, even faster
  4. Take a break
  5. Move on to the next sequence.

In general, workouts are between 40-50 minutes and they can be done in the comfort of your home, a gym, a park, etc. This is a godsend to people like me who hate going to a gym and feeling judged and intimidated by all the gym rats around. But the one thing that is generating all the buzz and rave reviews all over the web is the fact that each workout will make burn anywhere between 600-1000 calories! What do you think that means?

Insanity Results

insanity resultsI’ve lost 27 pounds after doing Insanity! 10 of those were gone in the first couple of weeks alone. And, I didn’t do any crazy diets or took any pills or anything like that. All I did was follow the plan as it is clearly laid out for you. Not too bad, huh?

Basically Insanity works like this: you follow the Phase 1 workouts during the first 30 days. These workouts last about 40-45 minutes. Once your 30 days are over, you immediately switch to Phase 2. Wham! Another 10 pounds gone like that!

Phase 2 workouts are a little longer and what this does, is prevent your body from hitting a weight loss plateau. If you have ever tried to lose weight before, you know how depressing it can be when you try your hardest to adhere to your diet and exercise and then the stupid scale doesn’t move. Well, by switching your workouts, Insanity will not allow you to hit any plateaus which means you are going to lose weight no matter what.

Another benefit besides losing weight when following the Insanity workout including the nutrition guide, is that you will build a great aerobic fitness. If you play ball, climb mountains, go hiking on the weekend or do any sort of physical activity that is aerobic based, you simply are going to kick the pants off of your competition!

That’s why in my opinion, Insanity and P90X combined, or what some people call hybrids are the best of both worlds. But I’d say, do 1 first and once you’ve completed it, you can move on to the next workout. After you have completed all phases of each of these workouts, then you can think about creating a hybrid of both routines. You can think of P90X as your preseason workout plan and Insanity as your during-the-season conditioning. Each has its benefits and merits but they are better applied at different times. If you were to ask me in which order to follow the routines, I would say that unless you are already pretty fit, the best order would be P90X first and then Insanity. Otherwise you will not be sufficiently in shape to even complete Phase 1 workouts. They simply are too tough, even when you modify the routines.

The P90X Workout

p90x workoutI know you are a smart person since you are asking yourself the question: “Does P90X Work?” You see, what most people do is this: they see the latest gadget or fad diet advertised on magazine covers or on TV, they spend their hard earned money on it and a few weeks or months later they feel cheated and disapointed because they did not get the results promised by the product. You know what I’m talking about: “With this gadget and in only 7 minutes a day you will get that lean, sexy body that you’ve always wanted…” You and I know very well that those promises are ridiculous and even offensive, wouldn’t you agree?

Does P90X Work?

Let me tell you something: I’ve spent many years being overweight, searching for that “magic” product that was going to help me lose weight and get in shape. I’ve tried all the popular crash diets, fitness gadgets without results. So, needless to say, I was very skeptical about P90X when I first heard of it. But to be honest with you, I wanted to try it!

I read many reviews and did extensive research on the different parts of this home fitness workout and I have come to the conclusion that one of the many reasons why P90X is so effective in helping people lose weight and get in shape is because it is been created using sound, scientific principles instead of fads and scams. Would you want to know why?

Look, the P90X workout program is the only diet and fitness program that focuses on you. For example, the P90X Diet is created with your own body type in mind and depending on your own individual circumstances, it will tell you how much to eat, when and what. In other words, this isn’t a cookie cutter approach to your health and fitness.

Instead, you will begin by figuring out your actual caloric needs to fuel your body for optimum performance while boosting your metabolism for maximum fat loss. Trust me, you have never dieted like this. I actually have a hard time eating all the food that I’m supposed to eat! Not bad for a weight loss program, right?

You see, in the past I would feel hungry all the time and this would make me feel anxious and cranky and in the end, it wouldn’t be sustainable in the long run. No wonder why I would lose 10 pounds but then gain them back plus some more. Has this ever happened to you?

My Insanity P90X Transformation

You see, I was your typical 30 something guy: I’m busy with work and family obligations, eating fast food on the go or at my desk at work with zero time or energy to workout after a full day at the office. A few years of this routine got me a lot of weight gain and poor health: I felt tired, depressed and even ashamed of taking my clothes off in front of other people, even my wife.

After trying pills, diets, workouts and every single thing I could get my hands on, I discovered P90X. I have lost close to 40 pounds and I have the energy and enthusiasm of a 20 year old! I’ve lost weight, increased my muscle mass, my cholesterol is down and I went from a size 40 to a size 32 on my jeans. And all of this while forcing myself to eat enough food to fuel my body. I mean, who could ask for more?

Learn what it takes to melt fat off your body, get fit & stay healthy

You see, we live in a time where information can be found anywhere and all one needs to do is go to the internet and look for answers. Unfortunately, when it comes to weight loss and getting in great shape in find good health, we are surrounded by thousands of products promising results in record time, only to deliver absolutely nothing! This is why I actually love most all Beachbody workouts, such as P90X and Insanity workout in any of its variations: Insanity workout, Asylum and now Focus T25.

These products are not just pushing pills or unhealthy diets. These are a comprehensive approach to good health first and the end result is weight loss and physical strength and stamina. That’s the good news. The bad news, is that those people who are interested in magic pill approach to their health, will only feel frustrated with no results to show for.

Listen my friend, what I’m about to tell you it’s not going to be easy and I may come off as rude. But trust me, I DO UNDERSTAND YOU!!! I am not a fitness trainer and I am not a celebrity getting paid thousands of bucks to push a product on TV. I am just a guy who, after getting married, found myself 60 pounds overweight, working a desk job that I hated and I pretty much numbed my misery with drugs, alcohol and fast food! I am talking about a 5’11” guy, weighing in at 245 pounds! That’s almost morbidly obese!

I paid hundreds of dollars (in reality, it may be close to thousands of dollars, but who wants to think about that now?) in diet pills, gadgets that I saw on TV on infomercials promising ripped abs doing nothing. I bought ebooks with workouts, gym memberships. I bought a rowing machine. I tried any and every crazy diet that I saw on Men’s Health magazine, that friends recommended or that I saw at the check out stand at the grocery store. And guess what? I didn’t lose a single pound. NOT A SINGLE ONE!!!!

You wanna know why? because losing weight and getting in shape is not about buying stupid crap! it’s about paying attention to your body in a holistic way: If you diet yourself to death, you are not gonna have proper energy levels to push hard during your workouts. Or you will not be able to sustain it. After all, who wants to only eat cabbage soup or drink some nasty detox juice?

Also, when it comes to your workouts, if you keep doing the same slow burn cardio routine on end, you are not pushing yourself hard enough for your body to change. If you are going to the gym everyday, and climb on the elliptical machine doing cardio workouts and you are wondering why you are seeing no results, I invite you to take a look around you. The people with good physique are not walking on a treadmill or doing silly moves with a 3 pound dumbbell.

Those who are ripped and have great bodies, are busting their butt doing sprints, lifting heavy weights, doing yoga and Pilates routines. In other words, when it comes to really transforming your physique, you need to take an approach that will focus on all areas of your health and fitness: balance, coordination, muscle building, proper nutrition, cardiovascular fitness. Have you ever heard the phrase “you can’t out train a bad diet”?

What Equipment Do I Need To Do P90X?

You can do P90X pretty much anywhere as long as you have enough space to do pushups. The suggested equipment is a yoga mat, a pull up bar, resistance bands or dumb bells.

You see, this program is perfect for busy people with limited time to go to a gym, for parents who can’t leave their kids while going out to workout or for people who feel intimidated by the notion of joining a gym or health club. While P90X is not cheap, it costs roughly $120, it is far cheaper than health club or gym memberships, it can be customized in many different ways and once you are a P90X Graduate, you can then move on to more advanced routines like P90X Plus or P90X One On One With Tony Horton.

Will I Really Lose Weight With P90X vs Insanity?

Look, there is no way to predict how you will react to this program, but what I can tell you is that if you follow the program to a “T” for 90 days, you will lose weight. There is nothing magical about it. Simple, plain, hard work. All you need to do Google for P90X results and you’ll see thousands of regular people, like you and me who have sticked with the program and that have lost 20,30 or even more pounds in 90 days using this fantastic home fitness workout.

BUT… If you still need to have guarantees, you get a 90 day money back guarantee from Beachbody who is the company responsible for P90X. You try it and if you don’t like it, you decide it’s not for you or you don’t get the results you want, you will get your money back, no questions asked!

I know that the economy is tight and we are all trying to find the best deal on everything. But if you decide to give P90X a try, I want you to get it directly from the manufacturer and avoid EBAY, Amazon and Craigslist. These sites are filled with counterfeits and many people are reporting non working DVD’s. The only place that will guarantee the product is when you purchase through the authorized, official P90X site. You’ve been warned, now let’s get you started on your way to a better, leaner, sexier YOU…

Best Supplements To Use With P90X and Insanity

Energy and Endurance

When it comes to supplementation, there are basically 2 kinds: Pre workout and Post workout. We are going to skip during workout supplements as I believe the most bang for your buck are going to be pre and post workout ones.

Pre Workout Supplements

As far as pre workout supplements go, I’ve taken OxyElite, which is also a fat burner, Beachbody’s own Energy and Results formula or E&E and also Cellucor C4. Out of these, the ones that I liked the most were either Beachbody’s E&E or C4. But in all honesty, I never experienced the benefits that many people report. My advice would be for you to give it a try and see how you feel and if you feel any difference during your workouts. OxyElite was definitely not for me. It made me way too jittery and didn’t like the sensation. Plus, in terms of fat loss, I think you can get better results if you really focus on your nutrition and getting the proper macro nutrients in check, following the advice give on each of these workouts nutrition guides.

 Post Workout Supplements

ShakeologyAs far as post workout supplementation, which to me is really where you will get the better benefits, are protein powder, Shakeology and P90X Recovery Formula. I know there are plenty more, but these are the only ones I’ve used. I have used all of these during different times and I like them all. In terms of keeping your budget in check, I think a good whey protein with a banana and a little bit of honey is a good starter.

What I normally do, is a mix of protein powder and Vegan Shakeology. That gives me a good post workout nutrition that helps me recuperate and be ready for my next workout. At some point I used the P90X Results and Recovery formula, but I preferred Shakeology, as that gave me more flexibility in terms of what I could use it for. Specifically, sometimes I’d do a smoothie in the morning if I was running late to eat breakfast, for example. I have also done the Shakeology Cleanse several times in the past couple of years as a way to keep my system in the best possible shape. If you haven’t done it, I highly recommend it.

Insanity workout, P90X and Shakeology FAQ’s

No. Insanity workout is designed to help you lose weight and get in great shape. Having said that, I can tell you that you are going to be extremely challenged whether you are in shape or not. My suggestion is to begin with a different workout such as P90 or Les Mills Combat before jumping to Shaun T’s Insanity.  A lot of people also do P90X first and depending on their fitness level they will either repeat P90X, jump to Insanity or do a hybrid of both.

Yes and no. The amount of calories burned depends on many different factors such as your intensity level and body weight. A heavier person will burn more calories for a specific exercise and a specific duration than another person who weighs less. Some people will burn up to a 1000 calories while others may end up burning only 500. My suggestion is to focus on proper form during all the insanity or P90X workouts and also focus on intensity. Push hard with good form and the rest will take care of itself. A lot of people end up getting discouraged or injured and end up having to quit. Better to take it easy and do the workouts the way they are outlined instead of trying to do too much.

It depends on your goals. Exercise bands are a great substitute for weights and are perfect for those people that travel a lot. Having said that, I can tell you that for better results, having a set of dumb bells is the best way to get the most out of your workouts.

The weight that you will lose depends on your nutrition more so than your workouts. Stick to a clean diet of lean proteins, good fats as well as veggies for maximum results. We recommend Shakeology and Shakeology 3 day cleanse as a way to boost metabolism and weight loss. Pay the same amount of focus and diligence to your diet as you do to your workouts and you can rest assured that you will lose 20-50 pounds doing these workouts. Also, I can guarantee you that, you are not going to lose a single pound of excess weight if you only do your workouts but keep eating processed foods and other unhealthy dietary choices.

This is the number one question that women have regarding Tony Horton’s workout. And the answer is an unequivocal NO!!!! Listen ladies, stop worrying about getting bulky and do your workouts as outlined by the workout guide. You would have to eat an inordinate amount of food and lift extremely heavy weights before you would bulk up. Check out a documentary called Pumping Iron and you will see how much work goes into building muscle. Instead of worrying about bulking, you should worry about not pushing yourself enough. If you don’t put the necessary intensity, your body will not respond to the exercise routine the way you would want it.

Shakeology is not necessary for weight loss. Proper nutrition is. The benefit of the Shakeology cleanse as well as drinking this shake is to get lots of nutrition simply and effectively to fuel your body for all your workouts and replace nasty processed food, with a super food supplement. If you are currently eating wholesome foods that are not processed, eat plenty of veggies, fruits and lean proteins, then you may skip Shakeology. If you are having trouble eating breakfast, for example; or you would like a tastier and healthier alternative to post workout supplements, then I can’t recommend Shakeology enough! I do a 3 day Shakeology cleanse 2-3 times a year in order to detox from all the food and drinks from the holiday season, for example. It helps my body stay regular and it makes me feel amazing.

Also, I would say it’s not a gimmick! Lots of people complain that it’s too expensive without thinking that they spend the same amount of money everyday on lattes or other nonsense that adds up to more than the $120 price tag of this shake. Come on, $4 a day for a drink that will promote intestinal health and help you lose weight should be a no brainer, if you ask me.

Listen my friend, these two workouts are safe to do IF… you pay attention to the instruction given by the instructors and learn to use proper form and focus on the moves at hand while working out. The types of injuries that you can get with these workouts vary. For example, you can hurt your knees when jumping or laterally running with Insanity Plyometric routines if you don’t warm up properly, are on an uneven surface or get careless due to exhaustion. You can also hurt joints or pull muscles when lifting weights with P90X. Like I’ve mentioned before, you need to pay close attention to proper form and workout technique. But that applies to any workout, whether basketball, football, karate or whatever sport. Proper form, proper warm up and knowing your limits are the best defense against injuries.

T25 vs Insanity

T25 vs Insanity

Insanity Focus T25 VS Insanity Workout

Everyone knows about the super popular Insanity workout. After all, they have infomercials about it playing non-stop around the clock in different TV channels. But perhaps not a lot of people are aware that Shaun T has created a few newer options to the Insanity workout with Insanity The Asylum, Insanity The Asylum Vol. 2 and now Focus T25.

What Is Focus T25?

This is a set of home workouts that are 25 minutes long. They are designed for those people whose schedules are super busy and would not have an hour for working out. These workouts are intense and you are working hard from the minute you press play. These are fast paced routines, that rely on high intensity moves to give you maximum results in the shortest amount of time. Just like the original Insanity, this workout program is 60 days long.

These are offered for those with tight schedules, those who prefer an high intensity interval training type workout but that would like to still get results from their fitness routine.

T25 vs insanityFocus T25 Review – T25 vs Insanity

One of the main differences between T25 and Insanity is the workout duration. 25 minutes versus 45 – 60 for the original Insanity workout routines. Focus T25 is a 10 week program that is divided into two different sections: Alpha and Beta. Just like with Insanity, the first phase is created to get your body ready for the demands of phase 2.

I have done all three Insanity workout options: Insanity, Insanity The Asylum and T25. Out of all three, my favorite and the one that gave me the best results was Asylum. Insanity is a great program, but for me, it was a little repetitive. T25 was great in that it was only 25 minutes and it gave me great results.

When I completed the Asylum, I was in great shape, after having completed P90X and P90X2 and it was still a pretty tough routine. But, it was really fun and included an amazing level of variety in the workouts. I honestly felt like an athlete training for my olympic event. Plus, I got really lean and strong after 30 days of doing it. But like I mentioned earlier, this was after doing P90X, X2 and also some of the P90X One on One workouts that were offered by Beachbody.

Is T25 Effective?

Most people think that they need an hour long routine or they feel that they’re wasting their time. But studies have shown that 30 minutes of high intensity exercise can be equally effective than longer workouts when it comes to fat burning. I don’t know about you, but I much rather spend 25 minutes pushing hard, than spending 60+ minutes in the gym, particularly if I can get the same results. Having said that, I know that there are people who really love their hour long routines, such as the ones offered in P90X or Insanity.

Who is T25 For?

  • Focus T25 is a perfect routine for people who:
  • Want to see results in less gym time.
  • Busy professionals, parents, students, etc. who wouldn’t normally have an hour for working out
  • Those who have already completed other Beachbody workout routines. I.E. P90X, Insanity, Les Mills Combat, etc.
  • Cardio lovers

Focus T25 FAQ’s

Do I need any equipment or gear to do T25?

Insanity T25 workoutThe only requirements for doing T25 workout successfully is floor space (just like with Insanity) to move side to side and front to back. A typical living room space should be plenty. As far as equipment goes, you will need some resistance bands, but the Focus T25 base kit, comes with what you’ll need, so no need to go out and spend more money on equipment.

Are supplements needed for T25?

Supplements are not needed, but in order to achieve great results, you can maximize your efforts with some of them. The ones that are recommended by Beachbody are:

  1. Shakeology: To really get all the nutrients your body needs to repair and have energy for all your workouts.
  2. E&E Energy and Endurance: a pre workout formula to help you push harder during your workout routines
  3. P90X Results And Recovery Formula: A post workout supplement to replenish your muscles after the intense effort you just put in during your workouts.

Do I need to be Super Fit to do T25?

No. As with other Beachbody workouts, there are three levels of intensity that you can follow: from crazy hard by following Shaun T, or basic by following the modifier in the workout. Typically, the modifier will demonstrate the routines with movements that are low impact and / or lower intensity.

insanity max 30Insanity Max:30

Guess what? there will be another version of Insanity with this new workout program from Beachbody. According to the official website, these will be “The Craziest Thirty minutes that will get you the best results ever”.

There is not a lot of information about this training program yet, but I can tell you that there will be no equipment needed other than your computer or dvd player to press play and kick some ass!

The premise of Insanity Max 30 is that you will be pushed to the max and your challenge each and ever workout will be to push a little harder, go a little longer before you are completely out of gas. At this point (and without having really seen the workout) it seems to me that the only difference between the original insanity is the fact that this will be a 30 minute option instead of a longer workout. But as soon as more details are announced, I will make sure to include them here and list all the pertinent information. So, stay tuned!

Final Conclusion

As you can see from this extensive analysis, thinking about Insanity VS P90X is not very straight forward, unless you have a clear set of goals in mind. Whether you want to get in top shape, build muscle or lose weight, you need to understand that it isn’t possible to accomplish all at the same time and therefore, it will be necessary to focus on one are of fitness first.
